Video games today are impressive, no doubt. They're incredibly realistic-looking, they sport stellar graphics and offer finger-snapping game play. Gamers find hoards of their ilk online, then go storming castles and lighting up zombies together. It's practically reality.
But there's something missing. Something games had back in the day. Back when I was knocking thumbs to Bubble Bobble, Frogger, Contra, Super Mario Brothers, Burger Time, and Sonic, realism didn't matter. I wanted something simple, two-dimensional that let me fiddle with 2 buttons and a joypad. Done deal. Fun times.
With less technology, video game developers needed more story. Ludicrous stuff. (Comedy troupe Those Aren't Muskets may have hit the nail on the head with their interpretation of video game origins.) The Wii is getting back to this old-school style with it's childish graphics, simple gameplay and colorful worlds. Games that don't need a 2-pound instruction manual.
This British promotion for the new Watchmen movie takes it back to the arcade. Load 'er up, toss in that virtual quarter, play the Watchman 8-bit Video Game and kick some ass. Game design by Littleloud. The soundtrack alone is killer, in an ear-splitting kind of way. Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, select, start, bitches.
